Neuropsychology and Head Injuries

Head injuries (also called Traumatic Brain Injury, TBI or concussions) are a very common outcome of playing certain sports as well as accidents such as falls or motor vehicle collisions. A traumatic brain injury can occur when the brain collides with the inside of the skull because of a blow to the head (such as a baseball hitting the head) or when the body rapidly stops (such as when a car hits another car.) Other brain injuries can occur when the brain twists inside the skull and some brain cells get damaged by what are called: ‘shear forces.’

When the brain hits the inside of the skull or twists around there can be bruising or sometimes bleeding that changes how the person’s brain works. Because of this, it also changes how that person thinks and feels. Many symptoms are possible after an individual experiences a traumatic brain injury, but some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Depression/lack of interest
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Trouble at school or at work

These and many other symptoms arise when the brain gets injured and it is vital that specialists (such as neuropsychologists) assess the person. A neuropsychological assessment makes it possible to determine ways to help the person function better at school or at work or determine when it is safe to go back to playing sports.  Neuropsychologists are doctors who are uniquely qualified to help in these situations. In addition to answering the previous questions, neuropsychologists can help prevent additional brain damage and help your medical doctor with treatment planning and prescribing medications to help you feel better.
