How The Brain Changes As We Age

As we age our brains change too. Most people notice that with the passing years they become a bit more forgetful and sometimes have some trouble driving or coming up with the precise word we are looking for. Often times we worry about what these changes mean for the well-being of ourselves or of a loved one.

Sometimes the changes you are noticing just normal age-related decline. At other times you get the sense that these memory changes are worse than what is normal.  So, what do you do when you have these worries?  Well, in cases like this it is the best to see a neuropsychologist to do some objective tests to determine a precise diagnosis and to provide recommendations to improve functioning or minimize further decline.  In fact, the earlier you get evaluated the more treatment options are available.

So, what do neuropsychologists do?  Neuropsychologists are doctors of clinical psychology with special additional training in the relationship between the brain and behavior. When you or your loved one meets for a neuropsychological evaluation, their neuropsychologist will conduct a lengthy interview to find out exactly what their concerns are. Then they will conduct tests of memory, attention, planning & organization and visual abilities in a way that gives information no MRI can. What your neuropsychologist is looking for are strengths and weaknesses. Once these are known, your neuropsychologist can develop strategies to use strengths in order to make up for weaknesses and improve memory and other thinking skills.
